Crochet and Interior Design

A few months ago, I wrote a post looking at how I use crochet in my own home, with the focus being the kitchen. In this post, I wanted to look at how I have used crochet to style my main bedroom.

I know it is August and that it is quite warm, but crochet isn’t always about snuggling up under a deliciously cwtchy blanket. Although, it is perfect for that. Crochet is also great for creating a range of interior design pieces that can really create a statement, through the design of the piece or by using a really stand-out colour or eye-catching texture.

The main way I have used crochet in my bedroom is through the coordinated throw and cushion cover on my bed.

Having a throw on your bed like this, may not be to everyone’s taste but I like to use it to bring out a strong colour in such a way that it has an impact but doesn’t overpower the whole room. It is also a nice place for the cats to sleep!!

If you wanted to recreate this for yourself, it is very easy to do:

  • The pattern I followed for the throw is a very simple corner-to-corner (C2C) blanket from the fantastic Daisy Cottage Designs with the pattern in writing and in a YouTube tutorial.
  • The cushion cover is still using the moss stitch but this time in a square. For this, I followed a simple tutorial from one of my favourite designers, Toni Lipsey at TL Yarn Crafts, which is again in writing and has an accompanying YouTube tutorial.
  • The yarn is really beautiful as it contains a lot more colour than just purple – there are pinks and blues that make the overall colour so much richer and deeper. It is Stylecraft Highland Heathers in double knit in the shade Thistle and to get the thickness of the throw I actually used 2 strands held together for both pieces.

The next piece is this gorgeous plant support I made to allow one of my beautiful little plant babies to grow up the wall and as you can see from the then and now photos below, it is working a charm.

And the best thing about this is how easy it was to make:

  • First of all, you will need the copper hoops that form the main piece. These from Amazon are fab – I just used 3 different sizes, but you could use all 3 the same size.
  • I used a yarn specifically for macrame for this and chose this one from Bobbiny as I like that they used 100% recycled cotton to make all of their yarns. They do a good selection of different colours, but for this I wanted the plant to be the show-off, not the yarn.
  • For the macrame, I watched several videos, but this one I found the easiest to follow. I used two strands of the yarn, using a simple knot at each point the yarn meets a metal hoop, then crossed the strands over to create the X. I repeated this all the way down and secured it all and hung the piece on the wall using a picture hook that was already there.

The whole piece took about an hour to make and that was mainly because it was quite fiddly to work with the 3 hoops and to stop them from moving about. I’m sure that anyone could find a much more sensible way to work than I managed! I was over the moon with how it worked out and I love how, as the plant is growing up it, glimpses of the copper hoops peek out.

I hope that you have enjoyed this little look at crochet and interior design and maybe even had a little inspiration to try making something of your own. Please share pics with me if you do!
