A long time ago (but in this galaxy!) I had an idea and bought several of the deep box picture frames from my local craft store with the idea that I could use it in some presently undefined way. During this lock-down, I have been looking at those frames, and may or may not have bought several more, and thinking about how exactly I can use them. Generally, I find that if I leave ideas simmering they will eventually come to the fore of my mind fully cooked and ready to go.
The ideas simmered for a while and I finally decided to have a go at making some kind of 3D artwork using the frames and for the them to be around summer and flowers. I have been doing some gardening during the last few months and I think that was the remaining ingredient I required. During my many hours of searching for and fawning over various patterns, I hadn’t seen anything quite like what I wanted to do, so I decided to go for it in freehand.
I started with a basic background that I did using Tunisian crochet as this gives a very solid finish, with no gaps between the stitches, which I could then use as a base to build the layers of the picture. From that foundation, I just did what felt right – layers of grass in different shades of green, some sunflowers, a poppy and a daisy, a weeping willow type tree and, finally, a little bee.
I shared a photo of the finished item on my Facebook Page and also within some crochet groups on Facebook in order to get some feedback on the picture. The ensuing positivity was amazing and I sold the picture straightaway through my page and the customer ordered a second one for her Mother. They have since been delivered and they both loved them.
So what to do next with the other frames that I have bought? Well, the possibilities are endless! I have two frames to work with at the minute, both different sizes, which gives rise to very different options – more flowers? An underwater landscape? A day on the beach? Something for a child’s wall with dinosaurs, or trains, or zoo animals?
These ideas would be for the bigger of the two frames as I have a definite idea in my mind’s eye for the smaller frame. I have order the yarn and I started it yesterday. No spoilers, but this is a photo I took in preparation:
I can’t wait to see the finished piece.
As well as offering ready made pictures, I will also offer commissions.
