Crochet and Interior Design

As a crocheter, I am very proud of the items I create. Each one has taken a lot of thought and consideration – from the colour to the texture of the yarn, the texture of the stitch being used and also the practicality of the item. How could I not have any of these in my own home? I thought that I would share with you some of the items I have, which, as you can imagine there are quite a few, and show them to you room by room to give you chance to see the styling and to explain some of the ideas behind each item.

Even in the kitchen, there is room for crochet – cloths, towels, pot holders, etc. The windowsills provide fertile ground (pardon the pun) for some of my plants and where there are plants, there is the opportunity to make plant pot covers! I love making these as they provide a quick and easy way to try new ideas, including different yarns, colourwork or stitches.

These two are examples of my experiments that live in the kitchen:

The cover on the left came about through the discovery of a random ball of wool in my stash called Colour Pool by Stylecraft yarns, which has now been discontinued hence it being the perfect yarn for a quick make that would only need one 200g ball of wool. Colour pooling is something I find very intriguing and have a few items in my Etsy store that I have made using this technique (Colour Pooled Blanket and Tablet Cover). The idea of this technique is to deliberately create a pattern in the item using the colours in the yarn (click here for further information) and it is very rewarding when it works but can be infuriating when it doesn’t. Stylecraft introduced this yarn purposely for this technique and I wanted to use it with a particular stitch (the camel stitch) that I had seen and wanted to use as it mimics the look of a knitted stitch. I was very pleased with the final outcome as the yarn has colour pooled giving it an almost stripey effect and the stitch has worked exactly how I imagined.

The cover on the right was created in order to test a new pattern that I have written and am hoping to release in the next few weeks – it is currently being tested and I am (not so) patiently waiting for the results. As you can imagine, with this being my first ever pattern design, I am a little nervous. I will keep you fully posted with the release date.

The final item in the kitchen is this table runner. The inspiration for this came from the practicality of wanting a runner for the kitchen table and having a beautiful ball of yarn – James C Brett’s ‘Marble‘ yarn in chunky. This is a real favourite of mine for many reasons – the colours are stunning, are incredibly soft and are 100% acrylic which means it can be easily machine washed – and I’ve used it to create custom orders, mermaid tail blankets as well as this gorgeous little wristlet bag. I love how these colours have worked in the runner and the simple stitch allows them to be the central focus.

I hope you have enjoyed this little peek into my own use of crocheted items in the kitchen – it has definitely got me thinking of some other items I can make!
