Sometimes, the ideas for a new pattern are just staring you in the face. Or, in my case, next to me when I’m sitting on the sofa, which is where I keep the crochet tools that I use every day.

A while ago, I decided to make a crochet hook holder for myself using an old plastic bottle to make it more sturdy than just the crochet cover alone and it has been fantastic. So, I thought I’d share it with you as a free pattern and this YouTube video tutorial showing how I made it from start to finish.

It is a really easy pattern to follow and gives you something extremely practical to use at the end of it. It is also a pattern that you will very easily be able to personalise to suit your home – try different stitches, colours or thicknesses of yarns. You could also try different types, sizes and shapes of bottles for the basis of your storage pot.

Skill Level

Beginner – check the list of techniques below that I use in this pattern to make sure that you are happy with what you need to do.

Materials

  • Yarn – I used Stylecraft Special Chunky in ‘Parchment’ from Lovecrafts
  • Size 6/J ‘Sirdar’ crochet hook from Amazon
  • Double-sided sticky tape from Lovecrafts
  • An empty plastic bottle
  • Scissors – mine are from Neath Valley Wools
  • Stitch marker – I use an old piece of yarn but these are nice from Lovecrafts as you can lock them

Techniques/Terminology Used (UK):

I am using UK terminology in this tutorial but the only difference with the US is the double crochet

  • Magic Circle (MC)
  • Chain (CH)
  • Slip Stitch (Sl St)
  • Double Crochet (DC) – Single Crochet (SC) in US terms
  • Repeat (Rep)
  • Increase (Inc) – 2 SC into one stitch
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)
  • * * – instructions between asterisks are repeated the number of times shown in the pattern
  • (**) – at the end of each round’s instructions show the number of stitches you should have after each round

Pattern

  1. Using your 6mm hook and your yarn make an MC
  2. Into the MC: 6 dc, then tighten the MC and place your marker (6)
  3. inc into each stitch (12)
  4. (inc,dc) rep all the way around (18)
  5. (inc,dc 2) rep (24)
  6. (inc,dc 3) rep (30)
  7. (inc,dc 4) rep (36)
  8. (inc,dc 5) rep (42)
  9. (inc,dc 6) rep (48) – you may need to do more or less increase than I have done here. This will depend entirely on the size of bottle you are using.
  10. fpdc each stitch (48)
  11. dc into each stitch (48)
  12. Rep row 11 until the cover is the right height for the bottle you are using
  13. Rep row 10
  14. Rep row 11 until you have at least 3 rows which will fold over the top of the bottle. If you are using double-sided sticky tape, 3 rows will be enough as the tape will keep it in place. But if want to have a cover that is removable and washable, don’t use the tape and instead continue repeating row 11 for at least 7 rows in total. This will then keep the cover on safely but is removable when you want to wash or change it.
  15. Finish off with a sl st into the next stitch, ch, cut your yarn and pull through. You don’t need to sew in your ends – just tuck them between the cover and the bottle!
  16. If you are using double-sided sticky tape – cut a length of tape and stick this to the inside of your bottle approx 1cm from the top. Remove the backing paper on the tape.
  17. Place the bottle in the cover and carefully fold over your row 11 repeats, making sure that the detail from row 13 is running along the lip of the bottle. Stick the cover to the tape (if used) and fill your desk tidy / storage pot with all of the goodies that you want in there!

Enjoy making your pots and desk tidies, but don’t forget to share them with me on social media!
